What is breakfast like in Playa del Carmen? A journey through flavors from around the world
Some cities are known through their history, and others can also be discovered through their breakfast. Playa del Carmen is one of them. Within just a few streets, people from dozens of different countries live side by side. Mexicans from every state in the country, Italians, Argentinians, French people, Colombians, Venezuelans, Spaniards, Americans, Canadians and people of many other nationalities have made this city their home. And when so many cultures meet in one place, something wonderful happens: their flavors meet too. Within just a few hundred meters, you can eat breakfast as though you were in different parts of the world. But before traveling to other countries, it is worth making a stop at home.
Mexico: a country where every state eats breakfast differently
It would be a mistake to talk about Mexican breakfast as though there were only one. Mexico is a vast country with extraordinary culinary richness, and every region has its own traditions. During our travels, we have had the chance to discover some of them. In Oaxaca, we tried traditional specialties such as memelas, pan de yema and the famous Oaxacan chocolate. In Mexico City, we discovered classic chilaquiles, tamales, café de olla and an almost endless variety of ways to start the day. In Yucatán, breakfast has a very different flavor. Cochinita pibil, huevos motuleños and relleno negro belong to a cuisine with a strong identity. In Guanajuato, we enjoyed some of the best lamb barbacoa we have ever tasted, slow-cooked underground according to a tradition passed down for generations. And in Quintana Roo, where we live today, the influence of Yucatecan cuisine remains very strong and mingles with an increasingly international city. That is exactly what makes Playa del Carmen special: Mexican traditions live alongside cuisines from practically every corner of the world.
A breakfast without borders
After traveling around Mexico, all it takes is a walk through a few streets of Playa del Carmen to keep the journey going. You can start the morning with a freshly baked French croissant. A few blocks later, enjoy some Argentinian medialunas. Find a Colombian arepa, an American breakfast, specialty coffee prepared by baristas from different countries, or discover flavors that arrived here thanks to people who decided to begin a new life in Playa del Carmen. Few cities offer that possibility, and perhaps many visitors do not even notice it.
Our little corner of Italy
We too arrived years ago with a story behind us. We come from a family that has worked in bread and pastry making for generations. We grew up among flour, ovens and recipes handed down from parents to children. When we decided to open our cafés in Playa del Carmen, we never intended to copy exactly what exists in Italy. We wanted to preserve our essence while adapting it to everyday life in this city. That is why we make a large part of our products in our own production kitchen, work to maintain consistent quality, and offer prices designed not only for people on vacation but also for those who live here every day. We believe a good breakfast should not be an occasional luxury. It should be part of the daily routine.
Much more than coffee
For us, an Italian breakfast does not mean only a cappuccino and a cornetto. It also means freshly baked focaccia, bread made that same day, a properly prepared espresso and a moment to pause before the day begins. It is a way of life: a simple custom that, even thousands of miles from Italy, still carries the same meaning.
A city discovered one bite at a time
That is what we love most about Playa del Carmen: in a single morning, you can travel through different cultures without leaving the city. You can try a Mexican breakfast steeped in tradition, discover Argentinian, French or Colombian flavors, and finish with an Italian-style espresso. All within a few streets. All in the same city.
A little piece of Italy in the Caribbean
In a city where so many cultures live side by side, we decided to do what we have known best for generations: bring a little piece of Italian breakfast to Playa del Carmen. Not to compete with other traditions, but to become part of them. Because that is exactly what makes this city unique: the whole world can sit down at the same table here... starting with breakfast.
